I feel like Elaina is really getting big...until I put her on the couch and take a picture like this.  Then, she seems so small.

Elaina has a bump on the left side of her head near the temple.  It is hard like bone, fixed, and about 1-2cm in size.  We noticed it when she was a couple of weeks old and had her PCP look at it.  He wasn't concerned and said just to watch it.  So, at her two month appointment I had him look at it again and he said he would do some research and call some colleagues to get their opinion.  He decided it was a dermoid cyst.  Dermoids are generally in the eyebrow area, and are more rubbery when you feel them.  I wasn't convinced this is really what it was.  So he referred us to a pediatric surgeon at Wesley.  I mostly just wanted an answer as to what it was.  We don't plan on doing anything any time soon if it's not necessary.

So we went to the appointment and waited forever.  Fredo was ready to leave!  Elaina weighed 12 lbs 3 oz, so she is gaining very well.  After our wait we finally saw Dr. McKee.  She said she didn't know what it was but did not think it was a dermoid cyst.  It felt too hard like bone to her and wasn't in the general area they typically are.  So she is referring us to a cranio-facial surgeon, Dr. Goldstein, at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. I still don't have a feeling that it's something terrible, but at least he can give us an answer as to what it is (hopefully).  Since this is his specialty, surely he has seen it before.  She will probably need a scan of some kind for them to better visualize it.  If we get in soon enough we won't have to sedate her and I can just swaddle her and have her sleep.  It doesn't seem to bother her and it's not getting larger. We will know soon enough!
